How 3D visualization on a tablet is transforming quality control in manufacturing
Quality control without paper and without errors
How to detect a defect before it causes a problem
You know the feeling. A part passes inspection, goes to assembly – and that’s where you find something’s wrong. A missing hole. Wrong dimension. Component in the wrong place.
Fixing it at this stage costs many times more than catching the problem during inspection. Plus downtime, delays, frustration.
This is exactly what BEDNAR FMT faced – a Czech manufacturer of premium agricultural machinery with global reach. Quality is their foundation. And traditional inspection processes were no longer enough.
The old way: paper, drawings and experience
Quality control worked the same way for years. The inspector received a paper checklist and a 2D drawing. They went through the part point by point. Compared, checked off, documented.
The problem? A lot depended on the experience of the individual. Every shift controlled things slightly differently. And some defects simply got missed – especially those that don’t stand out on a 2D drawing.
On top of that: documentation. Stacks of paper that someone had to re-enter into the system. During a complaint or audit, you’d be digging through binders.
The turning point
When we started working with the BEDNAR FMT team, we knew there was a better way. Digital quality control based on 3D models – directly on a tablet on the shop floor.
The concept is simple: The inspector points a tablet at the actual part. The 3D CAD model overlays it on the screen. And they immediately see whether reality matches the design.
Missing hole? You see it. Wrongly oriented component? You see it. Dimensional deviation? You see that too.
No comparing with drawings. No guesswork. The system guides you through the entire inspection and documents everything automatically.
What changed
“Thanks to our collaboration with AYES, we were able to implement digital quality control based on 3D models, which brings us faster defect detection before assembly,” said Vojtěch Bednář, Director of Production Management.
BEDNAR FMT now uses the system primarily for incoming inspection of parts from subcontractors. Defective pieces are caught before they ever reach assembly. Less downtime, lower repair costs, consistent quality.
Where it makes sense
The solution isn’t just for incoming inspection. It works anywhere you need to quickly and reliably verify that a part matches its design:
- Incoming material inspection from subcontractors
- In-process inspection during production
- Outgoing inspection before shipment
- Audits directly at supplier facilities
Key benefits
- Faster inspection – no flipping through papers
- Fewer missed defects – visual comparison is more accurate than reading a drawing
- Consistent quality – the same standard across all shifts
- Complete documentation – evidence for audits and complaints
What about you?
If you’re facing similar challenges – quality control, consistency across shifts, documentation for audits – we’d love to show you how it’s done.
